  Library

Library is the most important facility at any educational institution. It occupies a distinct and central location in the Institute. SS-CARE has provided its students with a comfortable, spacious and peaceful environment in its library. The library has an impressive array of books on various disciplines such as Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Physics, Management, History of Pakistan and Islamic Ideology, etc. Currently there are more than ten thousands books in the library and this number is growing rapidly. Library has the subscription of several newspapers, periodicals and Journals. In addition, the library has electronic version of IEEE journals. The students can also access a host of international Journals and conference publications through HEC Digital Library from the library computers. The library has its own database in which the record of all the available books has been automated. Thanks to recent computerization of all library processes, students can not only search the library books/material through author, title, subject, etc. but can also find out whether the required material is available in the library or already checked out to someone; and more importantly they can do so not only from the computers lying in the library but also from any computer connected to the campus intra-net. Several computers have been provided in the library for browsing the web and especially for lecture CD writing facilities to the users. Efforts are being made to establish a network of libraries in collaboration with other institutes of the area so that thestudents of all these institutes have an access to a wider collection of books and other related material.

The School has inducted experienced and qualified library staff to assist the students in a variety of ways. The library remains open from 8:30AM to 9:30 PM. The library has a Book Bank, which provides textbooks to students of SS-CARE School of Engineering at discounted rates. This service is very useful to fulfill textbooks and course related requirements of the students as well as facilitate them in getting books in time from within the premises of the institute. In addition, this Book Bank is planning to start an old book collection campaign to collect used books from graduating students and to redistribute among the needy students who are presently studying in the institute.

  Laboratories

The school has adequate laboratory facilities for conducting undergraduate experiments in our Electrical Engineering program. Following is a brief description of the existing laboratories.

Computer and Data Communication Labs

There are three (3) computer labs with a total of seventy (76) state-of-the-art computers. Most of the computer stations are at least 1.2GHz P-IV machines with 256Mb RAM, 70GB hard drive and 17” colour monitors. Computer Lab-I and Computer Lab-II, each having thirty (30) computers, are used to carry out labs associated with courses, which require use of computer software/applications; and thus are reserved during the class scheduled times. However, the third computer lab. having sixteen (16) computers is available during these times for general use of other students. Other than these scheduled class hours, all these labs are available for all students. These labs have extended timings, i.e. from 9:00AM till 9:00PM, to provide maximum help to students for doing their assignments and projects.

Electronics/Communication Labs

This lab is used to carry out experiments in the core subjects of Electrical, Eclectronics and Communication Systems. The lab has thirty (30) work stations, each equipped with a dual-channel 40MHz oscilloscope, a 5MHz signal generator, a regulated variable 25V, 2A DC power-supply, multi-meter and a breadboarding station. Students work on these stations in the groups of two (2) and hence, this lab can handle a class of 60 students all at one time.

Digital Design Lab

This lab is meant to carry out experiments in the core subjects related to digital systems, e.g. Digital Logic Design, HDL based Design, Microprocessor based Embedded System Design, etc. The lab has thirty (30) work stations consisting of custom made DLD and Microcontroller trainers along with a PC loaded with requisite hardware/software. Students work on these stations in the groups of two (2) and hence, this lab can handle a class of 60 students all at one time.

Electromechanical System Lab

Experiments related to the subjects of Electromechanical Systems, Control Systems and Power Electronics are performed in this Lab. The lab has variety of equipment like cut-view and demonstration kits for transformers as well as AC/DC motors, Transformer Winding Machines, Permanent-Magnet and Wound rotor DC shunt motor trainers, DC series motor trainers, DC generators and Induction motor related experimental setups.

  Computing Facilities and Internet

The Institute has its own Intranet and a dedicated high speed DSL connection for high bandwidth Internet connectivity. Each student is provided his/her individual network and email account. Salient features of the policy on the use of Internet and intranet facilities are summarized below:

  • Each student is provided with 100 MB storage to keep his/her important data in a secure place. For security purposes, following password policy is implemented:
    1. Password will expire every 30 days and student will be prompted to change his/her password
    2. Uniqueness of password has also been incorporated in the password policy. Student will not be allowed to keep any of his/her previous 5 passwords
    3. Password must be at least 6 characters long
    4. The system will not allow a student to change his/her password manually. The student will be prompted to change his/her password every 30 days on the expiry of his/her password. If any student wants to change his/her password sooner, then he/she must contact the System Administrator
    5. Students are responsible for keeping their passwords protected, if stolen they should immediately contact the System Administrator for getting their password changed. This is because in case of any misuse of a student's account, the student himself will be held responsible.
  • Each student will have the benefit of an email address (Name@ss-care.edu.pk) with 5 MB storage space
  • Emails from Sent Items and Deleted Items will be deleted automatically after every 5 days
  • Downloading/uploading from the Internet will be allowed with a maximum size of 2MB. Students wishing to download above this limit will have to get permission from Chairman of the department
  • Internet traffic will be monitored, any misuse including but not limited to viewing/downloading/uploading indecent material or getting involved in the use/spread of such material in any way -- would be considered a serious offense leading to a strict disciplinary action with penalties as severe as expulsion from the institute
  • Playing games on Internet, using softwares which stick to downloading and keep a constant restraint on the available bandwidth (Kazaa, Morpheus, Napster, Gnucleus, etc.) is prohibited. Account of such students will be blocked, and will be re-enabled only with the approval of Chairman of department, with possible imposition of a fine

A Home Folder with a maximum space of 100MB is provided to each student to keep his/her important data in a secure place. The purpose of this facility is to define the need for performing periodic computer system backups to ensure that the critical administrative applications, student data and archives are adequately preserved and protected against data loss and destruction. This folder, namely Z-drive, will be available to students from anywhere they login on the institute premises. Students should save their important data as well as important e-mails in their Home Folder, as emails are not adequately preserved and protected against data loss and destruction. Despite all this students are highly encouraged to make a personal backup of any important data, e.g. on personal Flash Disks and the institute will not be responsible for any accidental loss of data in case of server failure, etc.

Whereas the Internet provides a wealth of information to the knowledge seekers, it also opens new avenues to the mischievous minds. The students are therefore cautioned that they themselves are responsible for any harm/damage to their personal respect/rights resulting from the exchange of email messages/documents, reading/followingannouncements on various web sites that they join and as a result of free access to Internet by anyone and everyone; the institute assumes no responsibility in this regard.
